Buddha Jayanti, popular also as Buddha Purnima, celebrates Lord Buddha's birthday. It also celebrates his illumination and passing. It is the holiest festival in Buddhism.
Buddhists see Lumbini (now a part of Nepal) as Buddha's birthplace. Named Siddhartha Gautama, was born sometime in the 5th or 6th century BC as a prince into a royal family. He left his family at the age of 29 however and started his quest for enlightenment after seeing the extent of human suffering outside the walls of his opulent palace. He became enlightened while meditating at Bodhgaya, the Indian state of Bihar, under a sacred fig tree, and is believed to have lived and taught mostly in eastern India. It is assumed that the Buddha died at Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, at the age of 80.
As shown in the scriptures, many Hindus believe that Buddha is the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Growing year in late April or May Buddha Jayanti is held on a full moon. Buddha Jayanti falls to India in 2020 on May 7. It will be the 2,582nd birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.
At the various Buddhist sites throughout India, particularly at Bodhgaya and Sarnath (near Varanasi, where the Buddha gave his first sermon), and Kushinagar. There are also widespread celebrations in mainly Buddhist regions such as Sikkim, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Northern Bengal (Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Kurseong). Buddha Jayanti Park, Delhi also hosts the festival. The park is located on Ridge Road, to the Delhi Ridge south end. Rajiv Chowk is the closest Metro station.
Many Buddhists on Buddha Jayanti visit temples to listen to monks giving talks and reciting the ancient scriptures. Devotee Buddhists can spend in one or more temples all day. Many temples show a small Buddha statue as an infant. The statue is set in a water-filled basin and adorned with flowers. Templar tourists spill water over the statue. It symbolizes a pure and new start. Many Buddha statues are decorated with the offerings of incense, flowers, candles, and fruit.
The Buddhists pay close attention to Buddha Jayanti's teachings. They are giving money, food, or products to organizations that are supporting the needy, the elderly, and the sick. Caged animals are bought and set free, as Buddha taught, to demonstrate love for all living things. The traditional dress is pure white. Food that is not vegetarian is usually avoided. Kheer, sweet rice porridge is also commonly used to remind the story of Sujata, a maiden who offered a bowl of milk porridge to the Buddha.
