The information system can be classified according to the use of the information in any given organization. Therefore an information system may be split into an operations support system and management support system within an organization.

• System Service Activities

     Data input in a company is provided by the end-user, who is processed to produce information items, i.e. reports, which are used by internal and external users. Such a program is called system service support.

     The activity support system aims at facilitating the business transactions, monitoring output, promoting internal as well as external communication, and updating the central database of organizations. The service support system is further divided into a transaction-processing system, management control system, and an integrated business system.

• Program to Process Transactions (TPS)

Such transactions can be divided into the processing of batch transactions, single transaction processing, and real-time transaction processing.

• Unit for Process Management

A computer system makes certain decisions in a manufacturing organization, without any manual intervention. Critical information in this type of system is fed to the system on a real-time basis thus enabling process control. These systems are called process management systems.

• Undertaking a program of cooperation

Recently, greater stress is placed on a team activity or coordination through multiple functional teams. A framework that allows for a collaborative effort by enhancing data communication and sharing is referred to as a collaborative enterprise program.

• Help Management Framework

Managers require precise information for taking an organizational decision in a specific format. A system that facilitates an efficient managerial decision-making process is called a management support system.

Management support systems are essentially categorized as an information management system, a decision support system, an expert system, and an information accounting system.
